Communities face a wide array of emergency situations, from active shooters to mass demonstrations. Law enforcement agencies nationwide now have access to valuable resources through the Collaborative Reform Initiative Technical Assistance Center (CRI-TAC), a program launched by the U.S. Justice Department in 2022.

Under the Department's Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS), CRI-TAC offers solutions and technical assistance to state, local, tribal, and territorial law enforcement agencies. The initiative focuses on identifying and implementing improvements and reforms through training, consultation, peer-based learning, analysis, and in-depth assessments.

"The CRI-TAC Initiative has been instrumental in enhancing public safety efforts across the nation," said Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta. "With over 1,000 engagements, ranging from de-escalation training to officer wellness programs, this initiative highlights the demand for effective technical assistance in law enforcement."

Areas of assistance commonly requested by agencies include de-escalation techniques, active threat response, public sector coordination, and officer safety and wellness. Specific topics addressed include using a public health approach to address violent crime and strengthening proactive youth engagement within transit agencies.

Types of technical assistance provided range from training and resource referrals to policy reviews and in-depth briefings from subject matter experts. Agencies have praised the program's effectiveness, citing gains in knowledge and positive changes in their operations.

Partnering with leading law enforcement organizations such as the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Sheriffs' Association, CRI-TAC delivers tailored technical assistance designed to meet the unique needs of law enforcement agencies. Applications for assistance are accepted on a rolling basis, and all services are provided at no cost to the agencies.
